FYI, virtual serial drivers were removed from OS 5, so this won't really work if you 
want to support it.

Yes, you should be able to.  I have not tried it myself but you should be
able to write a virtual serial driver to do it.  The Virtual serial driver
would communicate with your hardware and return the data to any application
that had opened the serial port that specified your driver.
Look in the SDK Serial communications section for details.  There is an
example in the Palm knowledge base called CryptoDrvr that could help.
