It literally takes a 1/2 hour.   I've modified my technique  where I build on 
both sides of the cardboard now instead of the butterfly design like in the 
picture.   I would definitely recommend starting with the ratlines.   Spray 
paint them black too if you want them correct (standing rigging would be 
covered in tar)

Thank you Jonathan.  I think I'd have to try that before actually making the 
model.  I'd hate to go through a lot of build and find I have to go to a hobby 
shop, looking for the right size ratlines.

(By the way, I thought the whole thing was called "ratlines" until I saw the 
instructions for the ship.  I'll never learn to speak boat.)

crossings/ ends of the strings, I make a slit to pinch the thread:
