Normally I use Smith and Company two part epoxy from "The Rot Doctor". It
mixes up to a consistancy between alcohol and water and soaks right through the
card stock coating each cell without disturbing the dye or water based ink
colors. It made a great set of "Pin Up" playing cards for my brother when he
turned 50, as well as waterproofing card and wood models. It "plasticizes" the
material. A radio control wood boat will bounce of rocks instead of
shattering. It is used on the West coast to restore wooden boats and old
wooden buildings.

You can use Krylon clear coat. A bit more difficult to soak through the card,
but you can spray all side and get a similar effect. This model can sink and
it will not absorb water, other than the lines and stays. Even the mast and
gaff are treated. I also treated the stand to use it as a "drying rack".
