Yes, Gil Renberg is right. In the split second it
took me to realize the hoax, I was rather touched
that a colleague should rely so strongly on the
amicitia .... If any colleague is ever in dire
straits and calls on the papyrological flying
squad (papyrologue sans frontières?), perhaps
he/she could use a code word? like the other half
of the amicitia just mentioned. If the 'Arm
robbers' can figure that out, they almost deserve
money.

The sad thing is that if ever one of us actually does head to Nigeria in
order to promote peace in West Africa and gets attacked by armed robbers
and then e-mails members of this list for money instead of contacting
his or her family members or embassy, the rest of us will think it a
hoax and delete the message, unknowingly abandoning our colleague to a
wretched life of begging on the streets of Lagos for enough money to buy
a plane ticket home.
