Dear papyrologists

The Fall 2008 Arabic Papyrology Webclass (see below) is fully booked. However, as some people asked me to put their names on the waiting list, I am considering opening up a second, parallel, class on Tuesday, 16-18 h (Swiss time).

In case some latecomers would like to join us, please register through www.ori.uzh.ch/apw until 29 August 2008.

Best wishes, Andreas Kaplony

The Fall 2009 Arabic Papyrology Webclass: Arabic Contracts of Renting and Buying Real Estate

Contracts of renting and buying real estate from Egypt (8th - 16th century) are sources especially rich in information on every day life. In this webclass, we will focus on living conditions, on renting flats and buying (shares of) houses, the relationship between neighbours - and the question of how far legal practice reflects social conditions.

This is an on-line webclass. During each two or three sessions, an unpublished contract from the Vienna collection is to be read. A scan of the document will be sent to you in advance. Estimated time for preparation: 1-2 hours/week. Communication will be in English.

Participants: MA and PhD students in Arabic and Islamic studies, scholars interested in Arabic documents, persons in charge of Arabic manuscript collections, etc.

Requirements: A computer (download); internet access; earphones; microphone (internal or external). Communication will be through your browser. No installation of applications or special fonts is required.

Duration: Fall semester 2008: 22 September - 20 December 2008; Monday, 16-18 h Swiss time (time might be changed)

Fees: CHF 250.- (scholarships on request; no fees for students at the Oriental institutes at Zurich, Bale, Berne, and Geneva)

Registration: through www.ori.uzh.ch/apw

Registration Deadline: 29 August 2008
