Hmmmm. I think this may have been partly a false alarm: I'd previously attempted to upgrade by installing over the old install. This time I blew away wimpiggy in site-packages on the server machine and then reinstalled over the top... That seems to have made the keyboard focus behave a bit more correctly, although I'm still noticing some quirks.
Haven't yet fixed the problem with menus not appearing but there may be a few things I can try first (like completely blowing away my install on both hosts and starting again!)
