This has nothing to do with the mixed word sizes -- at least, it shouldn't.
It's probably Pyrex being quirky and paranoid.
The current trunk has major cleanups in this area to try and handle these
cases correctly, and has also switched from Pyrex to Cython (which is more
actively developed). Would it be possible to try that and see if it's fixed
there?
(Note that there are protocol changes, so you'll have to upgrade both
server and client to test it fully.)
