Some interesting answers, just to say, my alternative would be a
reasonable powered PC with Linux on it. I would only be running
windows in a VM if I had to run it.

I'm mainly a command line person and usually run Fluxbox so I'm happy
with not having pretty GUI stuff.

Looks like the best answer so far is the quality of the hardware.
