Why incineration is hazardous?

Incinerator does not solve the waste problem. It just transformed the garbage to more dangerous items by generating poisonous emissions and toxic ash.

All incinerator releases have the potential to cause harmful health impact to the habitat & the environment including:

  • Stack gas
  • Fly ash
  • Bottom ash or slag
  • Other residues
  • Fugitive Emissions

The most widely known incinerator pollutants of concern are:

  • Dioxins
  • Particulate Matter
  • Heavy metals (arsenic, beryllium, cadmuim, chromium, lead, mercury)
  • Acidic gases
  • PAHs

The 1st proposed garbage incinerator in Malaysia

In November 2002, the federal government of Malaysia announced to locate the 1st Garbage Incinerator from Kampung Bohol, Puchong to Broga, which is about 40km southeast away from its capital Kuala Lumpur, because it is lightly populated.

The proposed project with a capacity of 1500 tonnes per day is estimated to cost RM 1.5 billion for its construction & RM200 million for yearly operating cost.

People's Protest

The Stop Broga/Semenyih Incinerator Protem Action Committee is launching an No Incinerator Campaign and Petition base on the reasons as below:

DIOXIN
Incinerators have been known as 'CANCER FACTORIES'.
NO SAFETY LEVEL of dioxin emission.

According to WHO, incinerator is the greatest source of dioxins in the world today. Dioxins are known and proven as human carcinogens.

THE SITE
Outcry for Environmental Injustice!

The proposed site is not suitable. It is located at the Permenent Forest Reserved within the geological fault area which has been identified as the Sensitive Area only reserved for recreation, research & education purposes.

WATER CATCHMENT AREA
More than 1 MILLION life is endangered!

Incinerator is not the end of landfill. The hazardous ash will be dumped for landfills. Over time, its toxics will pollute the surrounding environment and underground water.
