Hi, You don't need to have ipodder installed, but having said this the directory feature in ipodder that lists heaps of available pod casts is really helpful. Although there are heaps of online pod cast directories. http://www.podcastalley.com For starters. You can add a pod cast url into the newsreader just as any other rss feed, and it will tell you when there is new content to go and listen to. Good luck.
