The PNY vibe is around $170, and requires no software. I like it for its portability, and its good sound. It will last for well over 20 hours on one tripple a battery, and has FM radio, voice recording feature, etc etc. (32kbps). You can also record the radio; the one thing I don't like about it is the following. (I'll probably contact there tech support and ask for a future firmware).
When I am reading a book, and turn the power off, it returns to the beginning of the book, not where I left off. I am appalled by this, because you'd think there would be such a feature. I didn't know this at first glance, but the player supports folders. And what it lacks in resuming it makes up for in sound, a veriety of play modes/ equilizer/ and a portability/sound quolity.
