Steve, The $39 battery pack is the one that requires a universal camcorder battery charger according to SP tech support and they are NiMh batteries, but not sure how many cells or what voltage they are. The $49 lithium battery pack as I understand it, does not require a separate charger as it plugs directly into any usb port for charging. I guess it works just like a lot of the usb based mp3 players do in terms of charging. As I said, the best approach is to call SP tech support first before purchasing because both of these battery packs can be easily confused and you might wind up with something other than what you were expecting which means you would be stuck paying for shipping back to them for exchange..
