Of course it could be, it certainly does much of what Winamp does from what
I've read and played with thus far and its significantly smaller in size.
Why I like it is because its cross-platform so whether you're running a Mac,
Windows or LINUS, it will run on all machines and has (as I'm discovering)
some standard interfaces for all operating systems.
The other reason I like iit is because (thus far) its played every stream
and file format I've thrown at it.

You say you aren't recommending VLC as a replacement. Why not? Could it
be? thanks

Ok well if I may address your concerns as I believe I can certainly the
first 2.
Yes, Mac's come with their own accessible software, good that a major
company is developing software and given the fact that VoiceOver has only
been with us for a bit over 2 and a half years I reckon Apple (all-round)
have done a fair job, yeah I'm disappointed myself because some areas have
been lacking in advancement, web accessability for example but Apple do
frequently update their software and they do listen so the longer people
give Apple feedback as to what the problems are then the more chance we have
of getting things done. To give you an example, Leopard was released on 26
October and an updated 10.5.1 was released towards the end of last week,
first I knew of it was when both Mac's alerted me that updates were
available.
I too! Live in an area which is some way from an Apple store and it did
present a small challenge to me, I had problems with the logic board of my
Imac and I needed to get the machine back to the store, once there? The
machine was fixed in 48 hours, then came the problem of getting the machine
back. Solution to the problem? I've just purchased myself a "2-year" on-site
warrantee for $255.00 (Australian) and that to me is good valume-for-money
as I get service 24-7 and the machine is dealt with with 48 hours.
Now for our U.S. customers? Well I can tell you this, you're entitled to far
better service than Australian customers get if they get their Apple from a
franchise store as I did. Firstly, I believe that if you order online or
through Apple's toll-free number then you automatically qualify for some
sort of on-site warrantee and you get the machine delivered free of charge,
I cannot confirm this exactly but I'm sure that Apple users on this list
can.
Apple difficult to deal with when it comes to drivers? Well it depends on
how you look at that but firstly (and this is only my experience), there are
a lot of myths and jealousy's that come with Apple because Apple (unlike
Microsoft ) exhibit tight control over what drivers and what parts even make
up an Apple computer. One of the results of this approach is of course the
stable OS which is Mac OS 10.5 Leopard, the well eingineered and
well-designed product line which is the Apple Mac etc.
TO illustrate the point further still, we all know that Windows machines do
have conflicting drivers from time-to-time, this problem is virtually
illiminated with Apple machines because the Apple engineers test and give
the go ahead to drivers before they make the public eye.. If you think this
a good thing (as I do for the reasons I've outlined above) then fine but I
for one wish that Microsoft would put more controls over drivers and what's
out there, if that were the case then Windows would be a better product all
round than it is now. As I write this message, I've done a it of digging,
yes, Microsoft will test drivers but for an outragious fee, I think we're
talking a couple of thousand dollars so its no wonder that software
developers (those who can't aford it) are just writing drivers and hoping
for the best.

In the first place Macs come with their own access software as a part of the
current OS. In the second place, the reason I'm not using one is that no
place sells them within 40 miles and that's more of a trip than I want to
make. In the third place, tech support people have made it a point to
describe in detail how lousy Apple has been to work with in terms of driver
development. That doesn't mean I wouldn't be happy to try a Mac, but I'm
not going to go nuts over one. I don't go out of my way to call something
Linsucks or cast equivalent aspersions on Apple, but the Winblows, Internet
Exploder nonsense wastes everyone's time and bandwidth.
I think it pretty obvious that if the MS world had that many problems, it
wouldn't have survived and the same for Apple. Both companies have their
problems.

  Ok.

Lets make a few things clear.

  1. What in the world is your problem with windows. If you don't like it,
don't use it, not to mention don't call it a trashbox, you don't see me
sittin here calling your mack a trashbox. I haven't used a mack because I
don't know if there are any screenreaders available and certainly I
haven't
  heard of any.

  2. Secondly because, imho anyway, apple's products are a bit overpriced
and
not to mention I wish other companies would support mack (if mack is so
great, etc). I've got an acer aspire 3000+ here, hp pavillion dv5220, and
just recently got an alienware, 2.3 ghz intel duel core processor, 2 gb
ram,
  top of the line etc.

Now, the reason I'm saying this is because some people, like you, prefer
mack. That's perfectly fine. Some people such as myself like windows and
are
used to it, therefore use it. Now, I'm not saying anything bad about a
mack-
so why're you jabbing fingers at windows? for that matter, if mack does
everything you say it does, why are you using windows in the first place
if
  you don't like it?

I hope I don't look like I'm flaming you but, that's just my oppinion, and

also I kind of feel insulted when people call windows a trashbox, while
not
giving supporting evidence of such. While microsoft may have its
drawbacks,
I see nothing wrong with vista, just some things to get used to, and
besides, people are complaining about it all the time, but I personally
don't mind it. Now I know this is a pc audio list and will add that it
could
be your computer that's causing the crash. winamps never crashed on my
system, although I once loaded a .ogg file which free download manager was

downloading and it lagged my pc baaaaad! (of course, this was on the acer
with like 1.6 ghz, 256 mb ram) so I upgraded the thing with another 512
mb.
So hey, Dane, if you don't mind e-mailing me off list, I'd like to see a
mack in action and get the specs on the thing. Also would like to know if
any screenreaders are available and how good they work.
