I found I needed to change the sound back to headphones in the advanced thing with soudns and volume devices. They change speaker behavior to "surround sound," which makes lower volume if you're just using stereo speakers or headphones. I found this out the hard way when I noticed my sounds from all my files were peculiar sounding, so went searching, first for restore, and then it dawned on me what to search for under the "sounds and audio devices" APL in control panel. :) I hope this helps.
