I think we might be getting our terms confused here.
The 1 GB model *does* have a fast forward/rewind feature.
You know that same little area on the right side of the circle that 
you press to move to the next track?  Well, simply press and hold 
down on that button and the zen stone will fast forward through the 
current track.  If its not doing it, keep trying.
Same goes for the left side. Holding down on the button to move back 
through the songs that you've played already will rewind through the 
currently playing track.
  Being connected to the computer does not even figure into this at 
all, the only time the zen stone, at least for me, is plugged in to 
the USB port is to charge it up.
