Mike, I agree that the filtering moderators provide is a worthwhile function. This is why I believe announcement letters like Dean publishes help to fill that need.

They are not really spam; but, in many ways, they have the same effect on a list in dampening traffic which would benefit more list readers. It goes back for the argument of why a list should be moderated rather than being truly open. Note I said "it argues" and I am not suggesting that this should be done.
