Hi Peter,

I usually set my levels by ear a little lower than I want, then either 
normalise, or if the sound levels vary, use wave hammer, when 
I have completed recording.  Perhaps others can confirm, but I think the meters 
controlled by that option are visual and not 
accessible to screen reader users such as myself.  Perhaps they are of some use 
to those who have some sight.
