I spent $60 on a usb sound card and tried a p c m c i a and nothing worked. I like the machine. Try to find a machine with realtek audio. Test them because I tried the acer and it was some better.
At this time, I am trying a sager midern. It was an expensive and frustrating experience. If you just bought the Dell, try to return it. I sold mine to a Braille transcriber who never uses microphones. I think we will see more sigmatel because they have a merger going with realtech... It was an expensive learning experience for me! Do you know, by any chance, if using a USB soundcard would fix it? If so, any thoughts on something basic? Thanks. The Dell support teams admitted that sigmatel had a problem. The output is good, but input is very problematic. The web cam microphones sounded better than any of the external mics we tried, but they kept dropping out.. It was a shame I had to sell it, the xps was a light and fast machine... If you google the problem, you will see it mentioned as a known problem. Audacity records the source, but there's what I gather is called a "noise gate". The effect is that certain quiet sounds are missed. Help please.
