The CTRL-Down-Arrow combo turns the volume all-the-way down. It acts like a mute command.

In Windows Explorer you hit the space bar to select the item from the list box while holding down the control key. Your selected items can be verified in JAWS by pressing jawskey+ctrl+shift+down arrow. I'll leave it to others to describe how verifying selected items is done in WindowEyes, NVDA, and System Access, but I suspect this is done in the ways that are customary for these screen readers.
