Following some pointers from Dane, I found the site
http://www.apple.com/accessibility/itunes/ipodtouch.html which is Apple's
accessibility site devoted to the iPod Touch. On this page it says:
"The same VoiceOver screen reader made popular on the Mac and the iPhone
is
now a standard feature on iPod touch 32GB and 64GB (3rd generation). It's
the
world's first gesture-based screen reader, enabling you to enjoy the fun
and
simplicity of iPod touch even if you can't see the screen."
Note that when I checked the specifications pages for the different
models
of the iPod touch, I didn't see that they specifically noted whether the
model supported VoiceOver or not. The comparison table mentioned
voiceOver
for the Nano and the Shuffle, but not the iPod Touch.
As others have mentioned, I doubt they'll support VoiceOver on your model
but I would hope they would let you return or exchange it, especially
since
it was a gift.
Your warning about doing your homework before you purchase something is
duly
noted. I've seen disappointed customers on both the Rockbox and
Talks/Mobile
Speak lists. Unfortunately, finding some of this accessibility
information
isn't easy.

32 and 64 gig models. Anything less will not talk to you. And, so far
anyway, it has been my experience that Apple sees such problems as Buyer
Beware. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised to learn that my problem
is
limited to one isolated agent. Meanwhile, when buying a touch, make sure
to
get the right one.
