I've been running the free version of Switch for quite some time, and I haven't ever been asked to upgrade to the paid version, so unfortunately I can't help you with that. Except for DRM protected files, the free version of Switch has been able to convert everything I've asked it to, but this is probably highly dependent on the types of files you want to convert between.
>From the help file, here are the file types you can only convert between with the Plus (paid) version: There are a number of file formats that are only supported in the Switch Plus paid software version. These formats are also available, however, during the 14-day trial period of Switch Plus and during the first 14 days of Switch Free. These formats are as follows: Convert From: mpc mid (GM only) dss sri msv dvf act rcd rec shn moh ape spx Convert To: ogg flac rss m3u pls wpl aac m4a amr ape mpc spx If you have files to convert of the above format types, we strongly encourage you to make the most of the 14-day trial period to ensure the software does what you want it to do. Switch does not have extra supported formats that you can only access after purchasing a license, all supported formats are available during the 14-day trial. What you see during the 14-day trial is exactly what you get after a license purchase. All of the file formats Switch supports can be found at http://www.nch.com.au/switch/kb/747.html and here's that list: What file formats does Switch for Windows support ? Switch can open files in the following formats for Windows: NOTE * copy protected files are not decoded ^ playlists .wav (PCM, ADPCM+, aLaw, uLaw, and others) .mp3 (MPEG Layer 3) .mp2 (MPEG Layer 2) .mpga (MPEG Audio) .au .aif/aiff .gsm .dct .vox .raw .ogg .flac .amr .wma* .wmv* .aac* (not aacPlus) .m4a* .mid (General MIDI only) .act/rcd/rec (newer version of format not supported) .dvf (Not all dvf recorders are supported) .msv (Not all msv recorders are supported) .dss (SP Mode only) .sri .shn .cda .avi .mpg/mpeg .m3u^ .pls^ Switch on a Windows computer can open most other formats which can be decoded by Windows Media Player. Switch can also save files to the following formats in Windows: .wav (PCM, ADPCM+, aLaw, uLaw, and others, see here) .mp3 .au .aif/aiff .gsm .vox .raw .ogg .flac .rss .m3u^ .pls^ .wpl .amr .aac .m4a .wma These are the ONLY formats we claim to support, but if you want to request support for other formats then please post on our Switch Forum here As you can see, the file types supported by the Plus version is a pretty small subset of all of the file types supported by Switch. Fortunately for me, the file types I work with haven't been in this subset. -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com -----Original Message----- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Gary Schindler Sent: Thursday, August 26, 2010 6:18 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Problem With Switch (It Insists That I Buy It) you didn't do anything wrong.
