Also be sure to read this:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=155680#mp4v

As you can see, video decoding is quite complicated and not really dependent on the file extension, which just designates the type of "container" that is used. Also, the free version of winamp does not have native support for mp4 video, only audio. So that's likely what is happening. You need to experiment with the plugins described on the page there. Read carefully the section about mp4. And no, it doesn't look like winamp essentials has anything to do with this. sorry

Can't tell that it really says anything! However, with some files, when
that window pops up, it's showing a still picture of something; maybe a
picture of the artist (in this case, since it's not a known video) obviously
all it's showing is this little green thing! Thanks for the link; will
check it out!

Tom,
You've mentioned another window popping up. What is that? What does it say?

You might want to have a look at this thread on the winamp forums:

Just had another look; this thing seems to be called Winamp Essentials
Pack
Christoph Grether. Does this sound like what I should have downloaded?

Tom,

Are you saying you don't know whether you downloaded or not, or that you
even got the right programme?
What was the file name? What did it say while you were installing it?

As for winamp starting automatically, it sounds like you accidentally
turned

on an option in playback prefernces. I don't think this would have
anything
to do with a download, either Wineamp Essentials or otherwise.

Okay...assuming I've downloading the right thing, still no video! I do
get
something else that appears on the scscreen. But Winamp _still_ isn't
playing the video part! So guess it's "back to doing VLC if I want to
see
the video unless someone can tell me if I've done something wrong!

Okay...what I'm getting is "download Software Client" (there's also
another
link that says "download (something else; don't remember what) but no
link
that just says "download!"

Tom,

It looks like you have to click on the link that says "download". It
lists
the number of kilobytes of the file and the number of votes it has. It
looks

like a trustworthy site. Just try it :P
It will probably send you an .exe self-extracting archive. If it doesn't,
just dump the contents of the archive in your winamp\plugins folder.

Pardon my ignorance here, but exactly what (on this page) do I need to
click
for the download for this Winamp Essentials pack? Also, once I've
downloaded it, where do I install it? Thanks!

You can try this for the essentials pack. I just found it with a google
search and as usual there are a host of similar sites claiming to offer
the
same thing....
http://winamp-essentials-pack.software.informer.com/5.6/
I won't guarantee it will solve the problem but it can't hurt to install
this.

Okay...so how do I get this "Winamp essentials pack? Imagine it may be
kind
of a deal as Winamp is not being updated anymore?

Hi Tom,

While in Winamp try pressing Alt+V while the video is playing. Then if
you want to see the video in full screen mode press Alt+Enter. I hope
this helps.

Regards Steve.
