You're avoiding the issue, quite deliberately. Sarcasm is an intimate part
of bigotry but, hey, each to his own. "this isn't an english lit. list" is
begging the point.

Are you speaking of a homogeneous PC network or one in which we network Macs
and PCs? Is networking a Mac in a heterogeneous Mac-PC environment off topic
as well? I hope you're not saying that, 'cuz I'll have questions, shortly,
about that. I like and use many platforms, but I'm not expert in all of them
by any means, and the fine points of Etherneting an 8500 into a network of
x86 boxen running Linux Samba and Win OSes are bound to be nasty..

Ah, punchcards, those were the days... not.

No! Heard of Hyperion, but don't read Sci-Fi.as feverishly as I used to ;-).
Does talking to Arthur C. Clark at a 1968 NYC Sci-Fi Convention count? No,
that's hard Sci-Fi. Ah, the days before Cyber-Punk. Ike Asimov, Clark,
assorted bearded ones...
No, I just like to describe things as they are. After I turned fifty I
decided mincing words was a waste of energy.

Thank you! We pretty much agree on that one.

OK, I need your expertise - shouldn't piss you off, eh? I'm not a hardware
guy like you, my degrees were in Finance. I also know far less about Macs
than x86 boxes, that's why I joined this list and why I joined the 68K list
a couple years ago.
I upgraded my girlfriend's Quadra 700 to 68MB RAM, got her a PowerMac 6100
(empty), brought it up to 136MB RAM, adding a 9Gig internal HD and untangled
some ugly SCSI termination stuff while getting her scanner and CD and
ancient SyQuest to work; but when I open that bad boy 8500, am I going to
see an alien environment ;-)? Will adding RAM be that hard? I assume it's to
be 5v 168pin DIMM, right?

OK, it's there but its rare...

Whoa! Just talkin' diversity, not appellations!

Thank you! I haven't decided what to do with the PCI slots; the built-in
Ethernet makes it networkable, but if I wanted to run it as a gateway, would
the slots accept one or more PCI ethernet cards?
More to the point, what s/w's will I need for it to talk to a Linux Samba,
Win environment? Like I said, I'm playing catch-up on Mac intricacies. Are
programs like DAVE absolutely necessary?

Been there many times, love it... and I know what you mean, for sure! ;-)
Thanks for your help.

Time will tell. It always does.
