Gordon, do not give up yet! I went through something very similar just last
week! I tried installing a RAM upgrade on my 8500, which involved pulling
all cards off the mother board. When I got it all back together and pushed
the power button, the LEDs flashed and the power supply clicked. I had
seated all the cards very carefully, but I tried again. Nothing. I pulled
the RAM. Nothing. So, naturally, I began researching the new Macs, settling
on the new iBook (checkout outpost.com for no tax, no shipping, and 128MB
extra RAM). Then I shared my Mac woes on this listserve. Several responses
pointed to the daughter card not being seated all the way. I tried one last
time. Pushed so hard on the damn thing the motherboard popped out of a
couple of clips in back! Nudged the motherboard back in. That did it. The
8500 works fine. Someday, a wireless iBook will make a fine addition to the
household.
