Won't they replace like for like? This saves them fiddling with giving
money back so I would have though it would be their favoured method.

I'm guessing they send 'em out untested to cut costs and bulk buy low or
second grade stock from other companies production runs. This is how
they manage to sell them for $19.95 each. It's a good strategy as far as
they are concerned.
