I've long felt that the shift key should be handled by a foot pedal. Certainly a thumbless person could find someone to program an input device to handle the shift, command, space bar and other keys with his foot. I play the piano, and like the use of the foot to change the effect of my keyboard work. I'm sort of surprised this hasn't caught on in the computer world.
