Nuke and pave means erasing the original HD - or at least deleting the system folder - and then fresh-installing the OS from CD, as opposed to installing the new OS over an existing one.
OTOH if you are getting the errors you described when actually *running* the Mac from the CD then something really screwy is going on. Is it an original CD or an /ahem/ backup?
