I've had and used an Epson 740i (3 yrs, then sent to my son), Epson 860
(currently in use), Apple Laserwriter Pro (currently in use), and an Epson
1200 13" wide format (just received). All printers I bought used. My
experience with Epsons has been very, very good. Probably the most
dependable electronic items I've ever had, even more reliable than my Apple
and Handspring hardware.

If left unused for a week or more, the Epsons usually do require a cleaning
or two to get them going again, sometimes more if unused for a longer period
of time. No real issues with them. And I actually perfer them over the HPs
for the reason that the printheads are *seperate* from the cartridge, so I
can refill them many more times than I could a cartridge with a built-in
head.

Were I to venture a guess on the problem you're having with your Epson, I
think it's possible that some of the ink may have leaked out of the
cartridge onto the moving assembly that holds the cartridge, leaving marks
and stains on the paper. When you remove a cartridge, the openings on the
bottom for the ink should be INK FREE and DRY. If you remove a cartridge
and see wet ink around the openings, you had a leak. That most likely would
be an issue with the cartridge itself, not the printer.

Not sure exactly how you'd go about cleaning that. But if it happend,
changing the cartridge wouldn't make a difference, at least until the leaked
ink dries. When you remove the inks, look into the cartridge holder in the
printer and make sure you don't have any foreign matter in there that might
keep you from getting a good ink seal.
