Thank you Paul, and others for the additional information concerning this
virus. Nortons seems to have resolved the problem completely, and with all
the defraging & optimizing things are running a little better than before my
Macs got infected. I did end up losing several archived programs due to
extreme corruption, but I think I've got backups (somewhere) and I consider
it a small price to pay to have my machines back under my control. O'well
live and learn.

the other thread - 9.1 vs. 9.2.2.

The 9.1 vs 9.2.2 issue is often widely debated on the6400zone.com
With most people who have tried it on unsupported machines reporting a very
marked overall speed increase. Via os9helper at os9forever.com

The other trick to try is installing the 9.2.2 open transport control panel
and extensions in 9.1 - most people report a marginal increase in browser
speed/ page loading - marginal but noticable. More info (alot) and the DL's
can be found at the6400zone.com

My experience - I've been running 9.2.2 as a stand alone OS on both an
8600/G3 500 (kansas) and a stock 6400/200 for several months. For me, 9.2.2
runs like greased lightning compared to 9.1. So much so that I would never
even consider 9.1 again. I also have none of the sleep/wake /stability
issues or other garb I had under 9.1 - like the ocassional hang during boot.
The disk burner app is still unsupported although there is an easy hack
around some people have success with (os9forever.com for instructions). But
who cares, that burner app blows compared to toast 5.2 ti anyways. If you
had a major slow down using 9.2.2 I would suspect the installer did an
incomplete/corrupt installation or you had some type of conflict issue going
on.
