These two files are "de rigeure" for OS 8.6.

The best one, which can work from the HD, is Alsoft's free FOND RESOURCE 
FIXER. Corrupt FOND Fixer is an application that repairs all corrupt FOND 
resources created by the Mac OS 8.6 Font Manager bug. It is not necessary 
to use Corrupt FOND Fixer unless you are using Mac OS 8.6. Run this 
first, then install the Font Manager Update Extension from Apple. This 
will include another fixing utility but the one from Alsoft is better and 
easier to use. You don't have to boot from CD, etc. Just toss the one 
that comes from Apple.

Also, you should update your Disk First Aid to at least 8.6.1 since 
versions that came with 8.x had bugs that overlooked things:
