I have a Maxtor OEM 2.5 GB IDE drive (obviously not very recent) pulled
from a defunct Compaq DeskPro Pentium that I would like to use as an
auxilliary drive. I could initialize it as HFS+ with Drive Setup, but it
won't let me low-level format it. From what I hear I probably don't
need/want to low-level an IDE drive, it's different with SCSI, so I hear.
Also any time I use Drive Setup to test for bad blocks, it spins the ball
for a few seconds & then tells me that an error prevents checking. I can
copy files to it all right, tho', including a bootable system. That's why
I'd like to low-level it.
I'll probably use something more heavy-duty later, but it's out of my 6500
right now, since I can only use 1 IDE drive in there at a time. Maybe if I
find an extra lower-level sled I'll put it at the bottom of my G3...
I'm not sure if this counts as a Compaq drive, tho', altho' it has Compaq
branding on it. It is plainly a Maxtor drive: model 82580A5.
