Not arrogant, and not elitist. It's called Standards: http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/ Was it arrogant and elitist for Apple to demand strict coding guidelines for Mac apps? Of course not, it led to apps with a greater quality compared to the dime-a-dozen apps for DOS/Windows (Sure, they have more, but who needs six billion spreadsheet programs that don't interoperate and don't work well). If you're an American, try filling out your tax forms in a non-standard way and see if the IRS just says "Well, I guess this is what they mean...". HTML standards, properly implemented, ensure a page looks the same across browser and platform. Playing fast and loose with the standards might make a page look pretty one one platform or one browser, but alienates users of others. I've been using Mozilla and Mozilla-like browsers for some time, and have no problem with 95% of the web. The 5% I do have trouble with very nearly always have an alternative with the same information. For example, the other day I made an online purchase of a computer component. The first place I went to immediately stopped and presented me with a "This page requires Internet Explorer 5.5+. Please upgrade your browser to use this site!" page, with a link to Microsoft. I call that arrogant and elitist. So, I hit back, went to the second store result, and got the part for the same price. Now, that didn't hurt me, but it did hurt the store. Their elitism cost them a sale. My elitism in expecting a bit of coding care didn't hurt me and gave business to a good netizen :) Anyway, this is dangerously close to OT, so I'll leave it at that.
