I bought this 4416S cd burner a couple of weeks ago. It is a used external unit. It has worked well on burning cds, playing audio and data cds.
Then I got distracted trying to get it to work with both iTunes (via authoring support) and Toast. I was swapping extensions in/out and generally had the drive turned on more than I had previously. At some point, I realized I was having unusual freezes (generally when quitting an application or restarting the system) and I got a couple of type 10 errors. At one point, I had a very difficult time in getting the drive to eject a cd. What I noticed yesterday was that both of the activity lights were glowing amber. Neither System Profiler nor MT Everything acknowledged the drive. Once it had even mounted a cd to the desktop (which ASP saw and you could select) and they still didn't see the drive on the bus. I went to the help page at Yamaha. It said that to reset the drive, disconnect everything but the power cord. Turn the drive on. If both lights glow amber and stay on then you *must* download a firmware update. They did and I did. What happens is that sometimes you can get a green light, but after a while you get both amber lights on. That can come and go. Having a green light, though, does not necessarily mean the drive is working as it should. I have had freezes, finder quits, and the inability to select items on the cd. The drive is the only thing on the external bus. It is terminated. The system is an 8600/300, OS 9.1. A drive with intermittent problems is probably more trouble than it's worth, but is there anything else I might try with this thing? thanks, jim -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
