Scanners have different ways of letting us know they need to have the light source replaced. An older UMAX I had did exactly what you're describing. I replaced the 3 watt [I think] fluoescent tube and it was fine again...until the next time about a year later.
Thanks for the suggestion, Al. I'll have a look at it and see if there is any way of getting inside it to replace the bulbs. To my old eyes, however, everything seems as bright as ever!
