I apologize if this is somewhat OT, but I need suggestions for the best way

Advice offered off-list would be fine.

Set up an ftp server on the PC. War-FTP is a good one and it's free.
Alternatively, set up an ftp server on the Mac, then connect from the PC. BetterTelnet comes with an ftp server, iirc.

Use an ftp client on the mac to do the transfer.

If the Max is running OSX, simply share the directory, look for that PC computer in your local hosts, or select Go> Connect to server and type smb://<computer name> to connect to the PC.
