I then booted into 9.1 and ran scans successfully off the Trio card. What would that imply? OS X 10.2.8 USB 2.0 driver is not working for the Trio? That infamous statement "we do not support (non-on-board USB) legacy Macs" having some meaning here? OS 9.1 has Nikon drivers listed, but I believe they are relying on the native extensions for OS X ... that make any sense?
Nikon claims to not support general PCI cards ... only gives one as their recommended one ... something called "Ratoc".
Anyway ... to recap:
Works On a PowerPC 8500 with OS X 10.2.8 and the combo Sonnet FW400/USB1.1 card
Works On a PowerPC 8500 with OS 9.1 and the Trio Sonnet FW400/USB2.0(1.1)/ATA133 card
NOT On a ..... OS X 10.2.8 and ... Trio. (with all kinds of removing all devices from the card, down to only one ATA left, added a SCSI external to run the software off of, Repaired Permissions, re-installed Nikon software, uninstalled Kensington USB software, ... ... ...)
Hmmm ... any ideas?

Has anyone had experience with USB 2.0 on an 8500?
I have a Sonnet Trio FW500/USB2(1.1)/ATA133 PCI card installed, and cannot get my new Nikon Coolscan 5000ED to scan.
Any suggestions?
The scanner works on my 2nd 8500 ... it has a Sonnet FW400/USB1.1 PCI card. The scanner sports the USB 2.0 connectivity.
I'm running OS X 10.2.8 on both machine, and have ample memory (512 & 768 or thereabouts).

Dirty slot ? Bad slot ?
Swap the card around and try it.
