I see all the extensions in OS 9.1, and believe they are correct: that is why the scanner works when I boot into 9.1 ... I just don't know about the OS X ones ... any clues? I am using "Peripheral Vision" and it shows the scanner becoming active when I start it up ...
The scanner seems to work under OS X when it is attached to a combo card, like the ones you mention ... this Trio thing just might be too much for a PowerPC 8500 and USB 2.0 (something about "bandwidth" - it attempts to control FW400 and USB 2.0(1.1) and ATA133)... Sonnet Tech hasn't responded with any solutions ... I did try to install their USB 2.0 drivers that they supplied for OS X 10.2.1 through 10.2.7 ... but it didn't work ... wonder if it was conflicting with the supposedly native drivers to OS X 10.2.8 ...
The Nikon 5000ED slide scanner has just been released in the US as far as I can tell ... it is relatively new ... perhaps there's a bug on the OS X side of USB 2.0 and/or the Trio card ... my other card I used it with, is USB 1.1 ...
My Kensington USB StudioMouse functions well through it ... I don't have any other USB peripherals to test it with at present ...

Nikon claims to not support general PCI cards ... only gives one as their recommended one ... something called "Ratoc".
Anyway ... to recap:
Works On a PowerPC 8500 with OS X 10.2.8 and the combo Sonnet FW400/USB1.1 card
Works On a PowerPC 8500 with OS 9.1 and the Trio Sonnet FW400/USB2.0(1.1)/ATA133 card
NOT On a ..... OS X 10.2.8 and ... Trio. (with all kinds of removing all devices from the card, down to only one ATA left, added a SCSI external to run the software off of, Repaired Permissions, re-installed Nikon software, uninstalled Kensington USB software, ... ... ...)
Hmmm ... any ideas?

I use a fuji camera with my Macs. I don't need any proprietary software. I just plug the camera in and the camera pops up as another drive. I can access with any graphic program. or open the folder and do whatever I want. I assume you have the USB card support 1.4.1 installed as it is part of OS 9 and it or better should be in OS X.
Have you tried other USB peripherals with your card ?
That "Ratoc " may be a PC only card.
Surely someone out there is using a Nikon with a Mac.
I have a Belkin USB card in 2 macs and a firewirte/ USB card in another. They have all been plug and play after a lister clued me to the card support upgrade. make sure you have it installed and > active.
