To me, this is like asking me not to use one hand. It's one of the things
that drew me to the mac.

Has anyone else heard anything about this being a bad thing to do? My mac at
work has been crashing, and they have been thinking this could be a reason
why. It sounds strange to me. If it's bad, why include the ability to do
that?

This is a Window's recommendation caused by virus'. (Just a side comment, but if you tech department is recommending this, then they need to get their heads out of their ...'. This is a 'don't do this because it might launch a virus' recommendation because the tech department is too lazy or under-funded to properly install anti virus software.) For Macintosh computers, if you get a crash opening an application by opening the document, I would try rebuilding your desktop (in classic OS).
