Like Phil and his 8500 not booting, I have a 9500 that will not boot after installing 4 new 128 MB RAM DIMMS. The computer had been sitting around unused and unplugged for about six months so once dismantled, I also discovered the PRAM battery was dead. I ordered 2 new batteries from BatteryMart.com.

Wanting to continue with my upgrade project (G4 and new drive to follow), I cleverly (stupidly?) stuck two regular new1.5 volt AA lithiums together which measured out at 3.5v on a meter and alligator clipped them to the battery leads. I was hoping it was enough juice for the system to do it's self diagnostics during the boot-up and I would here the lovely bong telling me everything is OK.

No bong or boot with with all 4 new sticks installed. Yes bong and boot with only one new RAM stick installed. I determined my battery contraption was not reliable for always providing continuity of voltage so I am holding off until my proper batteries arrive since it is a 9500 with it's horrible design for troubleshooting RAM.

Thanks for bearing with me and my story... my actual question is this:

Won't the system still boot provided everything else is in order without a PRAM battery and the little diagnostic circuit check that takes place and resulting bong sound. Or does the fact that it is starting out from a completely dead status with no power connected until everything is reassembled prevent this?

Thanks, Mike
