Hi listers, I thought I might offer my advice here.
If you have a SCSI cable with say 5 connectors available, this is what it should end up looking like: 1. Connect to mainboard 2. Connect to CD-ROM or old hard disk 3. Connect to CD-ROM or old hard disk 4. Connect to new hard disk with SCA adaptor. [remember if you need to boot off it, this should be ID0] 5. Install an ACTIVE LVD SCSI terminator on the end of the chain. The SCSI chain will generally slow to accomodate the slowest device. So if your old hard disk and CD-ROM is rather old, then the new hard disk will not perform anywhere near its potential. However, the new hard disk will still have the advantage of spinning at a much faster rate than your old drive so it will still feel quite a bit faster. I mean the internal SCSI bus on the 9500 was only rated to 10Mbs, but that drive should be capable of at least 40Mbs .... with the right controller. You should NOT terminate any other device in the chain. SCA drives have no terminator built-in, and the adapters will not generally have this either. Normally, they would be attached to a 68-pin SCSI cable with a terminator built-in to the end of it. Since your SCSI in the 9500 is probably 50-pin (??), then that means you may end up needing another 50-pin to 68-pin converter so you can attach the terminator on the end, unless you can find a 50-pin internal one. If it was me, I would go and get another SCSI adapter, and run the drive off it. Get yourself a terminator, and it is done. You will get much better value from the drive like that. However I respect that not everyone has heaps of bucks, and you have to make do with what you have! Someone should tell the bloke you bought it from to get informed. Nothing would work in any computer if you terminated all the other devices on the SCSI chain - only the first one, or maybe none at all in some systems! And he reckons he sells a bunch of these drives - that's a bit of a worry. Wonder how many poor buggers e-mail him saying the drives don't work after he gives that advice?
