the 8600 has 8 slots for RAM and 4 slots for VRAM; you should have either 2
or 4 of the VRAM slots full. You'll see what I mean.

Well thanks to everyone for the help, but no dice. Pressing the cuda, zapping PRAM, re-seating the vram chips did nothing.. Still looks like I'm look at the monitor through a screen door.. But thanks for the help.. I believe it is time to acquire a 9600 mobo for this case.. So another question, would the 300mhz processor card in this 8600 work on a 9600 mobo?

on my 7300 I had a bad vrambank.
the screendoor would only show at 256 colours,
I experimented with shuffling the vram dimms and ended up with just using 3 out of for banks and leaving one of them empty,
and it worked, a little circuit was blackened,
so I did not use the bank next to that one - and it worked, of course at a lesser amount of wram - but it worked. nothing wrong with the vram dimm but the bank was bad.
