>>I have a 7500 with the G3/400Mhz card, over 500mb
of ram and tons of disc space. I'm running 9.1 and am
happy with it but all the new software requires 10.2
or 3. What do I need to change to go X like the big
boys??<<
You can run 10.3.x with that setup, though you might
have to get a different video card.
Get the latest version of XPostFacto at Otherworld
Computing. Read the notes on XPF and it will tell you
which cards do and don't work. An ATI Radeon 7000 Mac
Edition will work well and give you the ability to run
two monitors.
I use 9.1 for classic, with the needed 9.2 extensions
(pulled with Tome Viewer) to make the ATI Video card
work, which won't work right with an unaltered 9.1
system.
You might be a little disappointed with the speed, but
it is usable. On my 9600 the audio doesn't work under
X, which was a disappointment, because one of the main
reasons I wanted to run it was to use iTunes. iTunes
works, but I just can't hear it. I've used it
successfully to rip cd's and transfer stuff to my
iPod.
To be honest though, X runs faster on my iMac G3 333
with only 8 megs of video RAM than it does on the 9600
w/G3/400 card and 32 meg video card. Bus speed is a
real crippler. I'm just about ready to give up and buy
a Mac Mini.
Just an aside, I'm going to put a Sonnet Crescendo
G4/800 card up on the swap list for those who might be
interested...
