System corruption or the Mac can't decide which OS to start from?  Try
booting from 8.1 CD, goto the principal drive's sytem folder-->preferences
folder and trash ASLM, Finder, Mac OS and System Preferences. Move unneeded
OS system folders to the desktop then reboot from the drive. I suppose you
reset the PRAM after installing the card?
