Yes these cards do support OS-X. You must have Mac firmware on the cards. I have 2 B&W's running flawlessly under OS-X on Adaptec 2940UW and UW2 cards.
Where does one find the Mac firmware? I based my statement about OS-X support
on the Adaptec web site, which says this card does not support OS-X. If it
does, I'd like to try it.
What you likely read was the statement by Adaptec announcing that they will not longer be supporting OS-X. This does not mean the cards will not work under X, just that Adaptec will no longer be releasing updated firmware/drivers etc.
The second problem you have is most PeeCee model cards have too small a ROM chip to accept the correct firmware for a Mac. And then yet again you run into the problem of getting the firmware onto the card as the firmware updater tools will not allow you to install the firmware on a card that does not already have a previous version of the firmware.
Now having said all that there are ways around if you want to spend the time. For example an associate and I got our hands on a few 2940UW2 cards. We removed the old ROM chips, replaced them with new bigger chips capable of accepting Mac firmware. Then after much cussing and fighting figured out that if you have a PCI mac with a Mac Adaptec card -already- in it you can then put the card with the new ROM into a slot and the updater will happily load the new firmware into the new card. This also works for cards that natively have large enough firmware but have some other code like for a PeeCee.
I should also note that this same trick works for flashing cards like the Radeon 7000 PCI card for other PCI, Beige, B&W and Yikes machines.
As for the firmware images and updater software the last time I looked (two weeks ago) they were still on the Adaptec web site for available for download.
