Not sure what you mean by "narrow" vs "wide" but there are adapters
to give you the 50 pin internal SCSI connector used by the 8500 from
68 pin or 80 pin drives.

I have an IBM 4.5gb drive with 68 pin connector in an 8500 using
such an adapter. It took a bit of fiddling as the connector was
an extended one that hit the side of the drive bay, but I filed
away a bit of the bay side and got it in. If you can find an 
adapter that fits close to the back of the drive you will have
better luck.
