OK:

What I do is this. It works with all Macintosh
computers right up to and including the DV SE iMacs,
but I recall that it was ESPECIALLY effective with my
old Sonnet-powered 6500:

I leave the computer on. I move the keyboard aside and
place a towel on the desk in front of the monitor. On
the towel I place a claw-hammer, bread-knife, a couple
of pairs of rusty pliers and a broken hacksaw blade. I
wait ten or fifteen minutes and then I say loudly in
front of the computer, "I don't know f***-all about
how this son of a b***** is put together but if it
keeps on making that whining noise I'm going to tear
the rotten f***** apart and find out".

Then walk around the room scowling with a small
crow-bar or bent screwdriver in your hand (the bigger
the better)for a few minutes and shut the computer
off.

The next time you start up you will have a quieter,
more co-operative Macintosh.

Works for me !!

I LIKE IT !

Maybe it will work on PCs too. I know a few that could use a good talking to.

I have some BIG hammers and other tools.

But often lifting one edge of the computer an inch and suddenly taking your hand out quickly gives the machine just enough " jar "
to put wires back in place and move vibrating things away from their surrounding structure.

A solid but measured slap on the top of the case can often work too.
