Yeah, I had a similiar experience...
I put Mac OS 9.2.x on my Power Mac 8500 with a PPC604 chip (OS 9.2 + requires a G3 processor)... and it
was a bit unstable, froze up randomly here and there.. so I gave up and went back to OS 9.1...

canHi David,
I think you have the same problem I have. The 7500 and 7600 (my system)only take up to 9.1 according to the Apple Web site and Mactracker. However,I have been looking at macsales.com (OWC) at the XPostFacto info and there
is a Help Installer that will allow the 9.2.xx to be installed. Haven't
tried it yet. I got the same type of message when I tried to install.
Although XPostFacto does work, your mileage may vary. I had 9.22 installed on my 9500 for a few weeks and it self destructed after a while (no longer booted and or froze on booting.) As it seemed like way too much hassle to put it right, I gave up and reinstalled 9.1. (9.1 has never let me down so far.)
