Hi to all [PCI] Helpers!
I had a reply with [snips] of each Re: but N/S Comm.4.05 'quit'-I hate that word.
so am trying again without the quoted replies. Briefly, I have 8500 going again
with a newer S/G HDD. IBM drive had corrupted Finder/file structures. Was able
to run TechTool CD tests on it but TT couldn't repair. Aside from ext.
conflicts on
newer HDD, which I have solved (yeah, sure ;o) it is booting and running pretty
good. A few gliches to the contrary makes me think I'm not quite done with it yet.
But, it really is good to have learned things from you all, and to see Mac
boot up!
I'm now aware of CUDA switch. Is it a re-set for mobo data? I didn't see any change
after holding it down. I have not always had ID#0 HD terminated, so that may have
caused some or all of the Finder/file struct corruption. My ignorance is
paying off.
Ron posted, timely and succinctly:
Good advice! I suppose the <Level 2 cache card> goes back in too... afterI quote from Crescendo / PCI G3 or G4 Installation Manual:
After installing Sonnet Software 1. Shut down and open computer 2. Remove processor card 3. Remove Level 2 cache card 4. Reset CUDA switch 5. Install Crescendo/PCI Processor Upgrade card 6. Close computer 7. Turn on computer
Ron
CUDA?
Is it the single cache chip between the banks of DIMMS? Also have an open slot
above those, top right corner, looking at inside of mobo- what might it be for?
Guess I need a service manual (or schematic, just to show what I can mess up).
If the cache card was in it it goes back in. Yeah reset the CUDA just for drill.
Cache cards interfere with G3 -G4 upgrade cards like the one stated in Ron's missal. you don't have one of those do you?
The open slot is probably the famous ROM slot that is unimplemented
The 8500 manual link is on the LEM site somewhere.
> > ?) Has anyone put on/off switch on pwr. wires- to turn off 2nd int. HDD? I so,
> > which wire/s are patched into- 5v. or 12 v.- or does HDD use both voltages?Makes good sense. Does anyone know how this jumpering & commands are done?> Perhaps the safest for a switch would be to switch off both 12 and 5 that go to the drive concerned. I believe there are *softer* approaches involving jumpering the drive so it needs a command to start and/or mount...
Go to the manufacturer's website or to hardwarehell.com Find the link to the schematic and find the pinblock location for the pins to jump for spinup.
You may need to buy some jumper clips.
I thought it'd be nice to switch on a 2nd internal HD- plenty of fan pwr. in 8500,
& enough room in bay and belly for 1 or 2 more drives, turned off when not
use.
Try tigerdirect.com or other supplier for drive switches. These used to be common.
can't remember what the proper name was. They fit a drive bay opening and came with power connectors.
You're welcome,
