Well, if one sets up right with the supposedly right card, the proper cable
with active (whatever this quite means) termination and the right drive and
there is a big jump in performance, it can't be put down to magic... :)
Seriously, this is all a bit complicated. There are jumpers that can be set
to ensure this and/or my drive auto knows the mode depending on the card (I
have read a PDF on it)... I don't think there will be any doubt when I see
it. I have the HD, I have the ribbon and the card is close... I can feel it
coming...

Anyway, a happy thing (or maybe just a complication in life?) happened
yesterday that changes some things for me... An array of 4 9GB SCSI, 68pin
in a case fell into my hands along with an Adaptec U2B. Hard to believe
after wondering about this for so long! Suddenly I have more HD space than I
have a use for. I don't know much about the HDs inside at the moment or
about this RAID business folk talk about, but I will open the case and take
a look and read some stuff. They are much faster than normal 7300 HDs from a
quick test with a stop watch. Now this card might be the one to run the
Seagate in LVD mode looking at the specs... I am hesitant to declare
anything yet because SCSI technology is like a layer of trick mirrors for
the average punter... I *think* it is a suitable card. Why am I talking on
this instead of trying the LVD drive on the card? Because I like talking to
you all and it is too cold to fiddle with connectors and stuff in my back
room this morning... But I will soon have a go...

> I don't own a stop watch...

You have to get one of these Glen, they are very useful... Most watches have
second hands but a stop watch means you don't have to remember much... BTW,
many mobile phones have very fancy stop-watch and timing features...
