Cleaning out your cache and regaining space was probably the decisive factor. You can usually limit the cache size in preferences and you can clear out your histories too to regain disk space, also you can usually set the amount of history in preferences... In Mozilla, you can "compact folders when it will save over [optional] KB. Have not used NS for years because of all the almost unfathomable overheads I experienced...
